Minies and underground
The Geominerak Park of the Sulcis-Iglesias Territory is since 1998, thanks to the UNESCO, one of the most important mining areas of Europe and, for its particular geological situation, also one of the most interesting areas for mineralogists worldwide.
A first possible stop an a tourist trip could be the Mining Museum in Iglesias, situated under the Minerary Higschool. This museum offers the possibility to see a real mine gallery, together with some tools and machines from the oldest to the newest models.
Porto Flavia, maybe the most famous mining site of the area, is a proof of outstanding engineering craftsmanship, constituted by a gallery which finishes in the sea, used to load the precious ore directly on the cargo ships. The guided tour of this site takes one at the end of a gallery, on the edge of the sea, offering an impressive and spettacular view.
The Mining Machines Muesum, few meters distant from the Masua beach, hosts a vast variety of machines used for the mining activity in Sardinia, a testimony of the indutsrial revolution on thsi field.
The Villamarina Gallery, connecting the Vittorio Emanuele and the Sella shafts, makes one re-live realistically the life of a miner, in all its impressive details. Worth to mention are also the reconstruction of some mining techniques such as rock milling and transportation, and not to forget is the splendid Bellavista Villa with its enchanting garden.
The Santa Barbara Caves, situated within the San Giovanni Mine, are one of the most caves in the world, with an age estimated at 500 milion years, and a fantastic scenery with stalactites, stalagmites, baryt crystals, and a special part of the cave called "The Cradle".
Worth a visit is also the Mineralogy Museum in Iglesias, hosted by the building of the Mineral Technical Institute. The two halls of the museum contain more than 8.000 mineral and rock samples coming from all over the world.
